Do you have questions about salt?

I was editing some recipes for our site the other day, working with a member of our Beyond Diet team. She casually wrote "salt" as one of the ingredients, and it hit me - sometimes I forget that not everyone knows all the things I know about nutrition and weight loss, and sometimes I take that knowledge for granted!

I'm not trying to brag here - if some of my team members or clients don't know everything about healthy eating, I consider it my fault. After all, if my job isn't to educate and support you, then I don't know what it is!

So I told my BD team member to write "unrefined salt" next to the recipe instead, and then decided to write this newsletter. You may have read about this in your program manual, or you may have read about it in one of my newsletters ... but it can't hurt to repeat the ins and outs of healthy eating. It can be complicated to keep track of it all, and sometimes (yes - even me) we all need to be reminded.

So here's the deal with salt.

STAY AWAY from plain old table salt.

This stuff is the main reason salt has such a bad reputation. Our bodies actually need salt, but most research (especially what's been published in America) has revolved around regular table salt - and the results have shown that this stuff is just plain 'ol not good for you.

Yet, in many parts of the world, it is well-accepted that salt itself is not the problem ... it's the kind of salt that's causing problems.

The bad effects of refined table salt are pretty scary, actually. It often contains harmful anti-caking agents, some of which have been linked to heavy metal toxicity and kidney problems. A common preservative in these refined salts, sodium acetate, may cause elevated blood pressure and kidney disturbances.

So what should you eat instead?

18 pound (Healthy) weight loss in 4 weeks without a Fad Diet!

Well here goes for this week's update...

I had a bit of a pig-out last weekend after my weigh-in and we had a sausage sandwich on Saturday morning followed by a bit of a bbq at lunch time and a Curry at night followed by a lot of fruit punch.
Gotta let your hair down now and again?

Sunday wasn't much better as we sat outside in the garden most of the day.

So, back to today, I stepped on the Mr Wii not knowing what to expect and Hey Presto!
Down Four Pounds!

Yippie - that pleases me very much.

So, from Monday to Friday I have stuck to Green Juices, a great variety of mixes and I even had a hungry turn while out and about so I popped into a supermaket and bought some V8 (Not Bad at all)

We generally stock up on the following and blend it in the juicer and put it in the fridge:

Curly Kale
....the list goes on but juice up your Green Juice sweeten it with fruit at a 80% Green to 20% fruit ratio and enjoy!

Saturday 03/08/2013 - - Weight In

Well, I will cut to the chase.... it was a.... that is 14lbs in 3 weeks.

I was hoping for more of a weight loss but if one can have a steady weight loss of 2lbs a week then that is the best way to do it. Sustained weight loss over a long period of time is better that the fast weight loss and sagging skin problems that you see on the TV.

So, I had my favourite, Sausage in a toasted bun for breakfast and no doubt I will have a few calories throughout today but I am confident I will repeat this weight loss each week and I will keep you posted... I am truly 'Juiced Up' and raring to go!

Juicing Update - Weight Loss

Just a quick update on the juicing...

To celebrate my 9lbs weight loss last week we went out for a walk along Littlehampton beach. It was a beautiful day.

We enjoyed a sausage sandwich ( read correctly!?) a sausage sandwich and a cup of tea for breakfast at Hilliers Garden Centre. Then we had an Ice Cream as we walked along the beach and Fish n Chips for tea!....  a wee change from last week (spent the day at Buckingham Palace last week...(long story. I'll tell you later).

The point I am making is 'it's not supposed to be a punishment'

So, we had a wee treat on Sunday and Juiced the following Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri and I weighed-in on Saturday morning = 3lbs weight loss!

I am happy with that!
12 lbs in less that two weeks.

Now that we have changed weigh-in day to Sat - --- watch this space for next weeks result.

Why Should I Juice? Hear it from a Chef!

Since I am in the kitchen 24/7, making decadent meals that may not be so healthy, I am often asked, why does a chef like you juice if you can eat the most delicious food in the world? Here’s my answer from my personal experience…

Why Juice?Juicing is a way of concentrating all the nutrients, vitamins, phytochemicals, enzymes, minerals and alkaline properties from a large quantity of vegetables and fruits. Juicing alleviates the digestion process and speeds up the assimilation of the life-giving goodness. When you consume juice, you are giving your body a super dose of essential nutrition. And your body will thank you! But it might get through the first few days to feel the thanks.

The Tough PartWhen you start a strict juicing routine, it’s common for many people to experience a detox period. Your body may have withdrawal symptoms from the refined carbs and fats that you have been consuming prior to juicing, as they contain addictive properties. These refined carbs (white flour, sugar, rice and potatoes) and fats (chemically processed oils such as canola, corn, and soybean) are, in my opinion, dead food with no nutritional benefit.

It should take you three to four days for your body to detox and adjust. This is a hard period and it might be wise to advise your friends that you may not be a “happy camper” and to please make sure that they encourage you to stay on the course. Ultimately, many people find that when they know this period of detox will pass in a few days, it’s easier to start up.

Get StartedPreparation is key when starting a new diet or lifestyle change. In order to alleviate the detox period, stock up on vegetables and fruits for at least five days before you start juicing. Having all these vegetables and fruits in the refrigerator and pantry will keep you focused on your desire to eat healthily even when you start craving the sugar, salt, fats, that you have been accustomed to. When you get to day four or five you will probably want to see what other vegetables and fruits you can play around with as there will be a skip in your step and the sun will start shining out of you. This is the point at which you will have the conviction of continuing. Your enthusiasm and willpower will determine how long you will juice for.

How I did ItI juiced for 30 days straight. I dropped 35 lbs/16 kg. I now eat a healthy diet and still juice every day. Since January 2013, I have lost 82 lbs/37 kg. Some days I juice all day too, just because I want to and I like it. Read my full story.

I have been asked some questions over the past week which I thought I’d share:

1).How much juice did you consume each day?

During my first four days, I was consuming six 20 oz/600 ml juices. Things tapered down after that. I just listened to my body. I juiced when I was hungry. Sometimes five juices, sometimes three and I drank a good amount of water too. Don’t worry about the quantity of calories, but the quality of calories. Eighty percent vegetable and 20% fruit juices tended to sustain me better, while higher fruit juices with 60% vegetable and 40% fruit tended to give me more energy.

2).What about the taste?

Some of these juices are going to taste different and new to you. Your palate is going through a retraining period. Soon you will notice the great taste of healthy nutrient dense food. Even if it is not your “cup of tea” think about it from a different perspective. Think to yourself, “How good is this for me?” Is this juice better for my body than the store bought mac and cheese or fried chicken? You better believe it is. I am a testimony to not eating very well for many years even though I am supposed to be an influential Executive Chef. Over the years, I got caught up in addictive refined carbs and fats. I ate pizzas, burgers, French fries with mayo, cookies, and desserts and drank sodas in the employee cafeteria. I also tasted a lot of food that my team prepared during our lunch and dinner service times. I would then go home and eat some more late at night, usually washed down with a couple of glasses of wine!

3). Can I blend/nutribullet instead of juicing?

The beauty of juicing is the concentration of nutrients without the fiber, as I previously explained. Blending does however have its benefits and its place in a healthy lifestyle. We will discuss blending in future posts. For more information, read this article on blending vs. juicing.

4). Can I eat solid foods in addition to juicing?

There is no “right” or “wrong” way to start juicing. Some people slowly incorporate just a morning juice and then eat meals throughout the day. Some people jump right in and go right into a juice Reboot. Your detoxing experience will be greater and quicker if you go straight into the juice Reboot. Juicing is the most effective way to detoxify all of the years of poor eating habits. However, if you feel hungry and want to chew something, reach for raw carrots or celery sticks, or even steam some kale and have ti with your juice dinner. You are still doing wonderful things to your body.

5).This is expensive?!

So are pills and medical bills! Your health is as valuable as your life. I like getting my fruits and vegetables from the farmers market. Here is a great tip: Tell the farmer that you are juicing. Do they have any blemished vegetables and fruits? They will often offer a discounted rate and be grateful to move inventory that otherwise might go to waste. Tell them that you will be stopping by next week for more. The juicer does not care what the vegetable or fruit looks like. If there is a bruise on the apple, cut it off. A funky looking carrot? Who cares! A soft tomato? Yum! A split melon? They are the best!

If you do not have a farmers market, go to the best green grocer and ask them the same questions. Gimme your ugly vegetables and fruits! This is where the beauty of juicing comes in. I coin the phrase “Ugly is beautifully delicious”.

9 pound Weight Loss..OMG ?!* (In One Week)

Oh My Goodness.....It really works!

I am not the most negative person you will meet and I am not the most gullable either - I am generally a very positive person but I really did not know if this plan would work?

And Boy did it work!

I weighed in last Sunday ( on the Wii) with a BMI of 33.25
Today I weighed in with a BMI of 31.88

I am now officially 15 stone exactly and that's a massive 9 lbs weight loss in one week.

OK, let me explain. I know all about the fabulous weight losses that people have when they first embark on a diet / healthy eating plan and that often it's not truly representative because there's always a big weight loss in week one...This is not my 'week one'.

I have been playing with weight-loss for years and recently as you will read below I have tried the 5:2 diet, Calorie Counting, I stumbled across Beyond Diet and fell in love with Isabelle's eating regime but now that I've found Joe Cross and Juicing, the combination of all programmes are finally creating results for me along with listening the Shane ( and my
Homeopathic Doctor H - - - I am at peace with the world.

4lbs Weight Loss

Well this is a great diet ( or healthy eating plan)
That's two weeks now using the 5:2 system. Eating normally for 5 days and on two days restricting my calorie intake to 600.
Seems to be working as the last two Sunday weigh-ins revealed a 2lb weight loss.
We use the wii to weigh in and each Sunday the wee man said 2lb loss - yipee!
So that's 4 pounds in two weeks.

Welcome to The Fast Diet

Why fast?

We all know how you are supposed to lose weight: eat low-fat foods, exercise more… and never, ever skip meals. This has been standard dietary advice for decades and though it may work for some people, levels of obesity continue to soar. So is there an alternative? We think there is. Intermittent fasting. Based on the work of leading scientists from around the world, this is an exciting new alternative to standard dieting.

Intermittent Fasting does not mean stopping eating entirely. It means reducing the amount you eat, but only for quite short periods of time.

In The Fast Diet book I outline my experiences of trying different forms of intermittent fasting, before settling on what I called a 5:2 regime. With 5:2 intermittent fasting you eat normally five days a week and diet two days a week, cutting your calorie intake for those two days to a ¼ of their normal level. This means that on, say, a Monday and a Thursday you will eat 500 calories if you are a woman, 600 if you are a man.

If you stick to this plan then you should lose around 1lb (0.46kg) a week if you are a woman, slightly more for a man. Success also depends on not over-eating on your normal days.
You should not only lose weight but also enjoy a wide range of health benefits. Studies of intermittent fasting show that not only do people see improvements in blood pressure and their cholesterol levels, but also in their insulin sensitivity.

As one of the medical experts I interviewed put it: ‘There is nothing else you can do to your body that is as powerful as fasting.’

Well, I did think that I had heard it all but now there's another, I say another because it's not 'new' it's just I have not heard of it before.

The great thing is that my Doc is well in favour of it (sound like I've changed my accent?)
It involves a little bit of 'Fasting' init!

But that aint it tho' it aint really fastin an stuff jus keepin an eye on ye cals for two days...

It's the 5:2 eating plan.

Being in pain stinks!

Being in pain stinks!

That's exactly the thought I had when my poor husband was practically limping around this past weekend because his hip was "killing him."

Stewart is no stranger to pain. After years of high school and college football, the years of athletic triumph definitely left their mark on his poor body.

Luckily for Stewart he happened to marry the most brilliant woman in the whole world (and she is very modest too...hehe). Over the past several years Stewart has learned that nutrition, smart supplementation, and adequate sleep can work wonders, even for conditions that seem like you have no control over them.

In Stewart's case, since he had already done a decent amount of "banging up" on his body before we even met, I taught him strategies that wouldn't necessarily "fix" his back and hip issues, but could make the pain much much better.

You see, being in pain, negatively affects our lives more than we realize. In my dear husband's case, he loves to exercise, loves to play outside with the kids, and also loves to build awesome stuff using his skills in woodworking. On many days, the pain has stopped him from doing the things he loves and enjoying life the way he wants to.

I promise you this is not a "let's have pity on Stewart" party, because I assure you he would not want that. Instead, he would want you to know, learn, and implement the same principles he has used to control his pain, in your own life, so that you too can do all the things you love each and every day.

If you are feeling pain in your body, whether it's back, hip, knee, or shoulder pain, use the simple methods below to help your body heal in the fastest way possible:

Isabel's Top 3 "take down the PAIN" techniques

1. Replace potential inflammatory foods, with "healing" foods.

Instead of sugar or artificial sweeteners use Raw Honey or Stevia.
Instead of eating processed wheat bread use sprouted whole grain bread.
Instead of eating white pasta use rice or spelt pasta.
Instead of eating processed food, eat wholesome natural foods that come from mother nature.

I know at first glance that may seem like a lot to change, but my motto is "one baby step at a time." I know that's not exactly the most original motto, but it sure does work!

2. Forget the word WORKOUT and begin to use the word MOVEMENT. Unfortunately, people have a very negative perception of the word WORKOUT. Thoughts of "No pain, no gain" and grunting muscle men at a gym are what we tend to use to define the word WORKOUT.

How about thinking of your daily exercise as BODY MOVEMENT instead? Which would mean that on any given day you can choose what type of movement is the best fit for your body.

Instead of pushing heavy objects at a loud gym, how about...

Taking a walk in the sunshine?
Dancing with your headphones on as loud as possible? (Yeah, that's all me.)
Getting up out of your office chair and stretching for 15 minutes?

Let go of what a WORKOUT should look like and choose the MOVEMENT that feels best to you.

3. Consider taking a high quality proteolytic enzyme. Proteolytic enzymes are different that digestive enzymes (digestive enzymes are what you take with food to assist in digestion) in that a proteolytic enzyme will pass through the stomach or intestine lining and enter the circulatory system to break down excess fibrin. Excess fibrin has the ability to restrict adequate blood flow, not allowing red blood cells to reach the capillaries to oxygenate and nourish your muscles and remove the metabolic waste that is causing your pain.

This is a much, much better and safer approach than popping pain medication like Advil or Aleve all day long, which comes with a long list of dangerous side effects (chest pain, shortness of breath, weight gain and nausea).

4 of The Worst Vitamins

My brother emailed me yesterday.


He wanted to know if "fish oil" was a good supplement.


I think he may have been bored at work and using "Google University" to hunt down health facts...


He broke TPC Life Rule #1, which states, "You're a moron if you use the Internet for vitamin research."


The only exception would be my Natural Cures Watchdog Blog, of course.


The Internet is saturated with ADVERTISING, not facts. And when it comes to health, you're destined to come across an ad touting the benefits of fish oils.


Do you really think man, or even his prehistoric ancestors, was meant to suck down highly processed, extracted fish oils?


Rather than answer him directly, I figured I'd do so publicly so everyone could benefit from the free advice. In addition, I added three more ridiculous vitamins that you should avoid.


4 of The Worst Vitamins


What "they" say: Get omega-3 fish oils to be saved from the inner fires of inflammation, diabetes, Alzheimer's, and hell, UFO Abduction."


What science says: You don't need pills to get omega fats.

Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in generous amounts in servings of grass-fed meat, whole eggs, wild-caught fish and pemmican. And better than their "pill counterparts,"

food source omega-3 fats are accompanied with a host of micronutrients and other healthy fats required to increase functional lifespan.


What "they" say: Your entire family is vitamin D deficient - even the family dog - and pills will correct it. The deficiency explains all your ill health...and even your bad haircut.


What science says: Vitamin D pills are hormones made by Big Pharma and disguised as "vitamins." The University of Colorado, recently showed how synthetic vitamin D was traditionally used as a "rodenticide" due to its "cumulative poisonous nature." Once mass production was developed by Hoffman La-Roche and BASF pharmaceuticals, it was turned into a "vitamin" courtesy of slick advertising and industry funded studies falsely touting its benefits (checkbook science).


Vitamin D pills can "plug up" the body, causing the synthetic vitamin to hide and tuck away into your fat layers (for up to

While most studies suggest that resveratrol kills tumor cells selectively, evidence is emerging that certain normal cells such as endothelial cells, lymphocytes, and chondrocytes are vulnerable to resveratrol." - Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, 2009


What "they" say: Choke down folic acid daily and forever escape fear depression, heart disease, cancer or heck, high interest rates and predatory loans as "as long as we get our

400 micrograms daily." (Cheesey smile here by huckster)


What science says: Folic acid pills are yet another drug disguised as a vitamin. The Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening trial has linked high folic acid intake with a 32% increased risk of breast cancer.

Happy Anniversary!

Well, I cannot believe that's twelve months up already.

How time flies...

I have now had a book published on Amazon called 'One Stroke Too Many' and I hope to raise some money for the Stroke Association.

I started this year at 16 stone 1 pound and I have now lost 8 pounds but my goal is to get the rest off this year and to get off the remaining 3 drugs that I take to keep my blood pressure down.

I am getting readings of 125/77 in the mornings and slightly higher in the evening mostly around 147/88

I am still consulting my homepathic Dr, reading Shane's books and following Isabelle's healthy eating plan so watch this space as I get off the drugs and lose more pounds.
